President Extends 2001 Terrorism National Emergency for One Year
All agencies operating under the emergency powers granted after the September 11, 2001 attacks remain bound by the authority through September 14, 2027.
On September 8, 2026 the President issued a notice continuing the national emergency originally declared on September 14, 2001 in Proclamation 7463. The continuation is for an additional year, extending the emergency beyond September 14, 2026.
The action is taken consistent with section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act, 50 U.S.C. 1622(d). By extending the emergency, the powers and authorities adopted to address the terrorist threat remain in effect for the additional year.
The notice was published in the Federal Register, Volume 91, Number 174, on September 10, 2026, under FR Doc No. 2026-18589 and filed on 9-9-26 at 11:15 am. It will be transmitted to the Congress as required.
The continuation obligates all federal entities that rely on the emergency authorities related to the September 11, 2001 attacks to maintain those powers through the extended period.
