President Extends Election Interference Emergency Through September 2027
The national emergency on foreign election interference remains in force for a year, effective after September 12, 2026.
On August 31, 2026, the President issued a notice continuing the national emergency declared under Executive Order 13848 for an additional year. The continuation applies to the threat of foreign interference in or undermining public confidence in United States elections.
The original emergency was declared on September 12, 2018 pursuant to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The President invoked section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1622(d)) to extend the emergency beyond its September 12, 2026 expiration.
The notice cites the proliferation of digital devices and internet-based communications as amplifying vulnerabilities that allow persons located outside the United States to access election infrastructure or disseminate disinformation. The President concluded that these conditions continue to constitute an unusual and extraordinary threat to national security and foreign policy.
The continuation notice was published in the Federal Register (Vol. 91, No. 169, page 56547) and transmitted to Congress, as required by law.
