SEC Extends OMB Review of Form N-17f-2 Information Collection
The extension applies to the roughly 194 registered management investment companies that file Form N-17f-2, with comments due by Nov. 16, 2026.

The Securities and Exchange Commission announced an extension of its request to the Office of Management and Budget for the information collection associated with Form N-17f-2. The notice, published in the Federal Register on October 16, 2026, cites OMB Control No. 3235-0360 and invites public comment through November 16, 2026.
Form N-17f-2 serves as the cover sheet for accountant examination certificates required under Rule 17f-2, which governs custody safeguards for registered management investment companies. The form itself does not collect additional data beyond what the rule mandates, but it standardizes filing under the correct SEC file number and fund name.
Under Rule 17f-2, each fund must designate no more than five officers or responsible employees with access to assets, require joint action by at least two of them for asset handling, and maintain written notations for each deposit or withdrawal. Independent public accountants must verify fund assets three times annually, with two examinations occurring unscheduled, and transmit a Form N-17f-2 certificate after each examination.
The Commission estimates that approximately 194 funds file Form N-17f-2 each year, spending about 2 hours per filing. With an average of three filings per fund, the total annual burden is estimated at 1,160 hours, up from the previously approved 990 hours. The projected cost is $1,192.50 per fund, resulting in an overall annual cost of approximately $231,345.
