SEC Seeks Comments on Extension of Rule 17g-3 Reporting Requirements
The comment period runs until Dec. 15, 2026, and applies to the 11 nationally recognized statistical rating organizations required to file annual reports under Rule 17g-3.

Pursuant to the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995, the Securities and Exchange Commission announced a proposed extension of the information collection identified by OMB Control No. 3235-0626 for Rule 17g-3 (17 CFR 240.17g-3) of the Exchange Act. The Commission will submit the collection to the Office of Management and Budget for approval.
Rule 17g-3 obligates nationally recognized statistical rating organizations (NRSROs) to file annual financial statements, a financial condition report, an internal control structure report, and a count of credit rating actions taken in the most recent fiscal year. Confidential treatment is available for reports that request it under the provisions of 17g-3(e).
The SEC estimates that the 11 registered NRSROs will incur a total burden of 4,015 hours and an industry-wide external cost of $442,200 annually to comply, reflecting fees for independent public accountants and outside counsel.
Written comments are invited on the necessity, burden accuracy, quality, and potential electronic collection methods for the proposed information. Comments must be submitted to Austin Gerig, Director/Chief Data Officer, SEC, c/o Tanya Ruttenberg, via the protected email address by Dec. 15, 2026.
