FDIC seeks comment on revised How America Banks Survey collection
The notice invites comments by Dec. 28, 2026 on a survey that will sample 40,000 U.S. households in June 2027.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation announced a proposed revision to the information collection instrument for its tenth biennial How America Banks Survey and opened a public comment period.
The survey, assigned OMB Control No. 3064-0215, will be administered as a supplement to the June 2027 Current Population Survey. It targets individuals residing in U.S. households, with an estimated 40,000 respondents, an average response time of 9 minutes per respondent, and an estimated total annual burden of 6,000 hours.
The collection satisfies the FDIC's mandate under section 7 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Reform Conforming Amendments Act of 2005 to assess the size and characteristics of the unbanked population and to track household use of bank and nonbank financial products. It remains the only nationally representative survey that provides state-level estimates for all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
Comments must be submitted on or before Dec. 28, 2026. Submissions may be made via the FDIC website, email, mail to Robert Meiers, Regulatory Attorney, or hand-delivered to the agency's guard station. All comments should reference "Household Survey" and may also be sent to the OMB desk officer for the FDIC.
The proposed questionnaire is available at https://www.fdic.gov/resources/regulations/federal-register-publications/2027/2027-household-survey-questionnaire.pdf. The FDIC is seeking input on the necessity of the collection, the accuracy of burden estimates, ways to improve data quality and clarity, and methods to minimize respondent burden, including automated collection techniques.
