Treasury seeks comment on extending garnishment notice collection
Private sector, state, local and tribal entities must respond to garnishment notices; comments due by Dec. 28 2026.

The Department of the Treasury's Departmental Offices issued a Notice of Information Collection (OMB Control Number 1505-0230) to extend the existing requirement that financial institutions provide notices to account holders when a garnishment order affects an account receiving directly deposited federal benefit payments.
The collection applies to the private sector and to state, local and tribal governments. Treasury estimates 487,750 respondents will submit notices on occasion, with an estimated 10 minutes per account-holder notice and 5 minutes per child-support notice, resulting in a total annual burden of 76,688 hours.
Comments on the collection must be submitted in writing by Dec. 28 2026. The Treasury invites feedback on the necessity of the information, the accuracy of the burden estimate, ways to improve quality and clarity, and methods to reduce respondent burden, including the use of technology. All comments will be summarized for Office of Management and Budget approval and will become part of the public record.
The supporting statement notes no program changes since the 2023 filing but describes a revised burden-estimation methodology. No form is required; the notice is issued under 31 CFR 212.6, with record-keeping requirements under 31 CFR 212.11.
For further information, contact Treasury PRA Clearance Officer Juliana L. Pearson, or obtain copies of the submission from Spencer W. Clark via email or phone as listed in the notice.
